Celebrating our Rich Heritage The History of Grommets Ltd

From humble beginnings to worldwide markets! Grommets Ltd was started in 1993 by Sid Wells and Jo Boorsma with our HQ in a draughty shed in Horsham! Today we operate from our modern office and dispatch building in Henfield with our factory next door.

A fourth-generation British rubber moulding business making grommets and other small mouldings for a wide market including transport, engineering, medical, green industries, and military both in the UK and abroad - all underpinned by our ISO9001 LRQA accredited quality management system.

Frustrated with lack of progress in the Civil Service and then working in engineering, Sid Wells went into partnership with two friends to start RTS, a rubber moulding company. Over the years, Sid’s friends left or retired from the business. Unfortunately, the early 1990’s recession brought an abrupt closure to RTS.

Undeterred, Sid started again in 1993. Phoenix would have been an apt business name but instead Sid chose Grommets as it “did what it said on the tin”! Little did he realise what an act of brilliance the name was as, with the advent of the World Wide Web, and a Grommets website the “hit” rate was very high. Headquartered in a “shed” in Horsham with the factory a few miles away Sid recruited daughter Joanne to look after the accounts and make deliveries. As the business expanded it moved to one site in Henfield and Sid’s son Robert joined the business.

Joanne takes up the reigns as Managing Director in 2009

Sadly, Sid passed in 2010. Joanne had a vision of the future which Robert did not share so she bought him out in 2013. To move the business forward Joanne brought in family members with outside industry experience to share. Today, the business is 100% family owned with four generations represented – Joanne is MD; husband Mark (quality director); daughter Charlotte (office manager); stepson Josh (sales and factory planning) and granddaughter Saskia (social media).

Joanne (or Mrs. Grommet!) has, despite some bumps, pushed the business to success. Securing the continuation of the business on the current site by purchasing the freehold in 2021.

Today Grommets Ltd is managed by two directors and a management team comprised of family members – a fourth-generation business.

Grommets House: Expansion and stability; a dream realised in 2023

The construction of Grommets House in 2023 was the culmination of sixteen years of attempting to secure the freehold of the buildings and land to provide a secure place from which to continue expanding the business.  It finally fulfilled the dream of our founder Sidney Wells whose achievements are celebrated in a memorial wall located in our meeting room.

Our grand opening emphasised the importance of us being based on one site, secure from increasing rents and decreasing lease lengths.  Our permanent photographic display, “Then & Now”, contrasts the modern and comfortable working environment we now enjoy with those of our original, draughty, and aged offices which now seems more than a lifetime away!

Snap shots in time with plenty of space to be expanded by generations to come.
